Fava beans are a long green bean that come in their own pods. You can buy them fresh, canned or dried. Like most legumes lava beans are very high in protein and dietary fibre. They are also especially rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium and iron.
Steps for Cooking Fava Beans
- Soak fava beans overnight.
- If the beans are not shelled you should be able to de-shell them easily at this point. You should be able to slip the outer shell off by just squeezing them in your fingers.
- Place the shelled lava beans back into the pot and fill with fresh water.
- Bring the beans to the boil then reduce to a simmer.
- Cook for 1-1 1/2 hours
